WINNER EXCELLENCE IN HOUSING AWARDS 2009

PROJECT: South Coogee

BUILDSCENE established themselves as an outstanding and superior quality builder within a year of its inception into the Sydney building industry.

In 2009, BUILDSCENE received an Excellence in Housing Award for its very first building project since its establishment, in the category of House Additions/Alterations/Renovations – $1.5 – $2 million. The award was for a spectacular ocean-front project in Sydney’s eastern suburb with a futuristic glass design with every room boasting a view of the Pacific Ocean.

The Judges’ made particular mention of special innovative features which included a curved concrete upstand in the top-floor bedroom that serves as a beam and a curved wall and sliding door that separates the bedroom and ensuite.

New build of an ultra-modern terrace style residence and Winner of a NSW Master Builders Association of NSW Excellence in Housing Award 2009.

In its founding year, Buildscene undertook the build of what is now an enviable and ultra modern terrace style home in South Coogee with views of the Pacific Ocean from every room.

The entire site was only 385m2 and the building of the house was an interesting and exact process, with little to no room for error. Buildscene worked in depth with an Architect to achieve the necessary details required to meet the design intent for the house. The outcome is a build and finish that is one of a kind.

Construction works to the house, consisted of the demolition of the existing residence, retaining a part of each of the two side boundary walls and a 2 x 1.5 metre wide piece of the existing concrete slab on the ground and first floors.

The new house sits on concrete piles and has a structure of reinforced concrete, brick and steel that was built to tie into the retained elements of the existing structure. The home is designed around an internal courtyard, providing light and cross ventilation to all levels. To the east (the view and breeze) the house opens up almost completely to large decks, with the sliding doors designed to allow many different configurations for the internal-external connection of spaces.

The upper level holds the master bedroom with an operable curved veneer wall that acts to privatise the bedroom from the rest of the floor. In addition, a walk in robe, ensuite and study with the centre piece of the level being a huge free standing bath positioned centre of the room.

The entry level contains the entry foyer, guest WC, a generous open plan kitchen, dining and lounge room that is positioned under a huge curved void that creates a spatial experience that lifts and enlarges the entire house.

The ground level contains two bedrooms, office and kids play area with access to the pool and rear garden. The house also has a two car garage off the street with guest accommodation underneath that has views of the internal open air court yard.

The front elevation of the main house has a striking custom made glass façade with curved timber veneer either side that passes through the façade and carries into the house.
The building of the house required Buildscene’s diverse commercial and residential building experience, fine eye for finishes and think outside the box attitude.

Many challenges were faced during the building process due to the tight nature of the block and the very strict height limitations by Council. A challenge in which Buildscene thrived.

Most of the main elements of the house including the striking glass façade, front doors, curved Symonite and timber veneer walls, were custom made onsite and the use of new building products also heightened the challenges during the building process.

JOINT WINNER EXCELLENCE IN HOUSING AWARDS 2013

PROJECT: Vaucluse

In 2013, BUILDSCENE proudly accepted another Excellence in Housing Award in the category of Contract Houses between $2.5 – $3 million for a unique project located in Vaucluse.

Again the Judges’ made mention of the superior building workmanship in their comments:

“A great entry that looks amazing.  The judges thought the entry façade of sandstone, stained timber, and zinc cladding encapsulated the design of today’s modern homes.  The builder has taken great care with all trades and finishes and has satisfied the architect and client with the completed project.  The builder has achieved a very beautiful and unique home”.

New build of a modern tri-storey beauty and Winner NSW Master Builders Association of NSW Excellence in Housing Award 2013.

Construction work on this now beautiful and unique Vaucluse home was a very interesting and exact process with little to no room for error. It required Buildscene’s commercial and residential expertise and fine eye for detail and finishes.

Buildscene worked in depth with both the Architect and client to solve and achieve the necessary details required to meet the design intent for the house.

Construction works to the house consisted of the demolition of the existing residence, followed by the excavation of a large area of the site to house the basement area of the new home.

The entire site has a size of 736m2. The site now houses a beautiful and unique 3 storey residence including 5 bedrooms, guest accommodation, multiple living spaces, cellar, swimming pool and spa and a double car garage.

The build brief encompassed a large number of unique details including the full height glass walls looking directly from the rumpus room into the pool, the use of shadowline detailing throughout and the impressive sandstone-clad blade wall running from the basement to the ceiling of the upper level through the stair void, to mention a few.

The façade of the building consisted of Sandstone cladding, Acrylic render, pearl grey symonite and timber screens to the mask windows. The building is enveloped by anthra zinc which rolls around the fascia and sunhoods of the house then falls in the middle to both divide and ground the house. The use of Karri decking and screening has been incorporated in the material used on the elevations of the building to soften the look of the other external finishes.

As a team in the construction of this house, Buildscene achieved a very beautiful and unique family home.

WINNER EXCELLENCE IN HOUSING AWARDS 2017

PROJECT: Wahroonga

“A most accomplished renovation. Finishes were faultless throughout”.

These were the comments were made by the Judges for the NSW Master Builders Association of NSW Excellence in Housing Awards in which BUILDSCENE won their third award in 2017. This time the Award was won in the category of House Additions/Alterations/Renovations $1million-$1.2million for an extensive overhaul of an original 1930s Wahroonga home into a beautifully refreshed period abode.

A challenging project due to the extensive work needing to be done, but also because the homeowners had to remain on the site throughout the renovation. The home, which had a second storey added to the original 1930s build in the 1980s, required some extensive remodeling, including the insertion of a new kitchen and three bathrooms, a complete demolish and rebuild of the wraparound verandah, ceiling replacements due to sagging and water damage, and new internal and external doors installed.

An extensive overhaul of an original 1930’s home and Winner of a NSW Master Builders Association of NSW Excellence in Housing Award 2017.

The original Wahroonga property contained a 1930s rendered, full brick residence with a triple frontage on a large corner block with three bedrooms, lounge room, dining room, kitchen and bathroom with external laundry and garage.

Following a detailed brief from our client, Buildscene renovated and extended upon the original 1930s home, with an extensive overhaul. The project was challenging due to the extensive work needing to be done, but also because the homeowners remained on the site throughout the renovation.

The home which had a second storey added to the original build in the 1980s, required some extensive remodelling. This included the insertion of a new kitchen including underground spiral wine cellar, three bathrooms, a complete demolish and rebuild of the wraparound verandah, ceiling replacements due to sagging and water damage, and new internal and external doors installed.

The outcome of the build is a beautiful, award winning refreshed period home.
